Job Summary
The Associate Research Manager will primarily lead the implementation of a cross-country consumer protection survey, with data collection in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda. They will oversee end-to-end survey activities—including instrument adaption, field team management in collaboration with IPA Country Office and external survey firm staff, data quality assurance, and analysis and dissemination. The Associate Research Manager will also support other activities under IPA’s Consumer Protection Research Initiative and broader Financial Inclusion program, which may include developing initiative-level outputs and activities, supporting regulatory partnerships and collaborating with external academic researchers on selected projects to strengthen technical research skills. The role will be managed by the Consumer Protection Research Initiative’s Associate Director with support and mentorship by a (Senior) Research Manager and other Financial Inclusion Program staff.
Responsibilities
- Lead survey design, preparation, and data collection for CPRI digital finance consumer protection surveys across 10 countries. Oversee coordination with IPA country offices and survey firms, ensure adherence to standardized instruments and protocols, monitor field progress, and uphold data quality.
- Lead data analysis, synthesis, and dissemination of survey findings. Produce policy-relevant insights, draft reports and briefs, and contribute to cross-country comparative outputs and public goods.
- Coordinate with the broader CPRI team and external researchers. Ensure alignment with strategic goals, provide input into research pipeline development, support cross-project learning and documentation, support regulator engagements, and collaborate with academic PIs on selected research activities to build technical research skills.
Qualifications
- Advanced training in economics, public policy, statistics, data science, international development, or a closely related field (e.g., Master’s or equivalent experience).
- Proven ownership of end-to-end, large-scale survey research: instrument design, sampling/pilots, field team management, and rigorous data quality assurance across multiple countries.
- Strong quantitative skills and coding proficiency (including Stata) to clean, analyze, and document large survey datasets with reproducible workflows.
- Cross-country project coordination and vendor management experience (e.g., survey firms and country offices), delivering on time and to standard.
- Ability to translate evidence into clear, policy-relevant products (reports/briefs) and comparative insights suitable for public dissemination.
- Experience engaging policy stakeholders—ideally financial sector regulators—and co-creating practical tools (e.g., complaints dashboards, pricing monitors) and workshops.
- Excellent planning, communication, and stakeholder management skills; comfortable operating across time zones and cultures and solving field challenges under tight timelines.
- English fluency and ability to travel up to 25%.
